After graduating from Harding, I attended the University Of Oklahoma. My major was in Marketing and my minor was Finance. I was a member of Alpha Phi sorority where I served as Treasurer and Rush Chairman. After college I moved to Denver,Colorado with some of my sorority sisters. I lived there for 2 1/2 years, I worked for The First National Bank of Denver as a Trust Department Assistant. I moved back to Oklahoma City in 1965. I then worked for the First National Bank of Oklahoma City for 4 years as a Stock and Bond Assistant.
In 1969 I got married and gained an 11 year old daughter. In 1972 my son was born. In 1972 I obtained my Real Estate license and sold property part time.
In 1974 I went to work for Deaconess Hospital. I was divorced in 1976. While I was at Deaconess I served in many positions starting as Account/Payroll then as Human Resources Assistant. In 1985 I went to work part-time and did various jobs as a floater. I worked as Gift Shop Assistant, Mail Clerk and Medical Records Clerk. Then in 1990 I went back full time in the Human Resources Department. I was promoted to Director of Human Resources. I retired from Deaconess in December 1999 after 24 of service.
Starting in 1980 K. Crandall Barger and I started a company called M & K Specialities. We sold jewelry and small giftware. K had taken many classes and she would do the casting and we would both design custom pieces. We did this for about 10 years in between other josbs.
In 2000 I took some part time jobs. I worked for the Oklahoma State Senate as a Page Counselor during session for 3 years. I set up the Business Office for an Assisted Living Center and served as Activity Director. I worked for a Limousine and Mortuary Company driving limos, transported bodies, worked funerals and delivered cremains. Sometimes I delivered organs for organ transplants. I also worked for Williams-Sonoma in the call center. Some of these jobs were worked at the same time. I finally retired in 2004.
Healthwise I have had plenty of surgeries. The most serious was a massive heart attack. I had open heart surgery in 1997. At this time everything is looking good.
One my new adventures is I have joined the Lighthouse Fitness Center with K. Crandall Barger and Kathleen Miller Kaufman and I must say we are having fun. K and I also took classes for Concealed Weapons and are waiting to get our gun licenses in the mail. Now we can be gun- toting mamas.
During these last years my closest friendship has been with K Crandall Barger and her family. We have enjoyed traveling and shopping together. Our favorite vacations spots are Hawaii and Las Vegas. Our children have been raised as brothers and sisters and are still close after all these years.
In 2003, I nearly lost my son. As he was leaving work at the Limo company he was stabbed 9 times. It's a miracle he survived. He was in God's hands. He is now a Manager of another Limousine company. He received a Masters Degree in Accounting from Oklahoma City University and obtained his CPA License. Then in 2007 my step-daughter passed away. She left me with 2 lovely granddaughters and 1 wonderful great granddaughter.
I must say I really miss two of our classmates that I started to Nichols Hills Kindergarten with, and they are Ellen Roach Hodges and Beverly Bolender Mulder.
I've had many different experiences and opportunities in my lifetime and it has been wonderful. We all have our ups and downs, but everyday is a gift. K Crandall Barger and I have the same motto for living as follows:
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, body thorougly used up, totally worn out, screaming "WOOHOO WHAT A RIDE."
